Journal Entry

"And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary." (Galatians 6:9)

We’ve completed our new album. It’s titled, "Flap Your Wings," and right now I’m feelin’ like it may be my favorite so far! But it’s too early to say such a thing, really. Anyhow it’s stranger and more sentimental than ever (No surprise there!) and we sure hope you enjoy it as well. Tim Chandler flew out from LA twice (Over the Thanksgiving holiday and just a couple of weekends ago) and had a tremendous impact – not only playing the bass musically (and ruinously) as always, but contributing a few progressions and playing plenty of pleasantly bothersome electric guitar tracks as well. I never did set up a conventional drum kit (except on "Mercy Lives Here," recorded many, many months ago for Derri’s yet to be finished solo album). I mostly just set things on the floor and banged on ‘em. Derri sang like a bird. Dan got in a few tenor sax licks on two songs the night before flying home to Los Angeles to attend his father’s funeral service. Home? Yes, well Dan is originally from Akron Ohio, but he lived as many years in California before moving with us to Music City more than 7 years ago. I suppose home is where one’s loved ones are, and that’s a little spread out for us…but mostly right here in Tennessee now. Anyhow, the album was mixed by a Canadian named Julian Kindred (from New Brunswick) who achieved considerable clarity while messing up a few songs fairly successfully. Best mix we ever had!

I’ll not go into detail concerning the songs until some of you have had a chance to listen. Then I’ll tell all. Anyhow, other things are going on…

Derri is engineering and co-producing a Sheila Walsh Christmas album. I haven’t been hired to play the sleigh bells yet, but I’m waiting by the phone! I did play nearly everything else percussive that I own on Terry Scott Taylor’s amazing new record, which was engineered and co-produced by my friend, Phil Madeira, right here in town. It’s one of the most entertaining albums ever! Executive Dan is busier than ever getting the new "Red Hill" label off the ground (flap, flap, flap). Tim is back at the ol’ day job (so sorry) but we’re looking forward to seeing him very soon at Cornerstone. We’ll be playing Saturday at midnight. Hopefully one of us won’t pass out from exhaustion! Even so, we’ll recuperate in a lounge chairs by the pool. No, we won’t be in tents with the multitudes! Are you kidding? We’ll be at a nice motel 30 minutes away, out of the heat and dust.

Peace to all!

Steve
