Journal Entry

"One day the angels came to present themselves to the Lord, and Satan also came with them. The Lord said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the Lord, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." (Job 1:6&7)

Now here’s a project that I’ve thus far neglected to describe to you (with so much going on at once!), so I will now! It’s a book titled "City on a Hill" to be released simultaneously with the album. The sub-title is "Reflections on our Spiritual Journeys," and it features essays on personal faith by 16 artists, including myself.

The contributors are: Dale Baker (Sixpence), Marc Byrd (Common Children), Peter Furler (Newsboys), Christine Glass, Dan Haseltine (Jars), Rich Heil (SonicFlood), Tom Howard, Phil Madeira, Julie Miller, Leigh Nash (Sixpence), Charlie Peacock, Mac Powel (Third Day), Terry Taylor (Daniel Amos), Kim Thomas, and Derek Webb (Caedmon’s Call).

Many of these individuals were part of the album, and several are people I’ve come to respect and admire as followers of Christ and creative souls. I asked them to offer personal testimonies of faith – to discuss their journeys from darkness into light – to share their ideas and feelings about Jesus…2000 words each, give or take whatever. I was surprised and pleased at everyone’s eagerness to participate, as busy as they all are. And the insights they offered are truly inspiring! I’m so grateful to each of them…and for the opportunity to put this book together (especially now that the work is done!). I know it will be an encouragement to many, and hopefully to you.

Yes, and my friend, Dale Baker chased everybody down and shot ‘em (with a nifty 60’s camera) and provided plenty of intriguing black and white photos he’d taken on his travels. I didn’t even know he was a photographer until he heard me lamenting about our lack of funds to accomplish the task, at which time he offered to take on the task within our means. Thanks Dale! Also Kim Thomas, an accomplished painter who did the album cover, offered her art to be used throughout the book. I’m quite pleased with the thing as a whole, really!

City on a Hill, the album AND the book, will be available late August.

Out of darkness and into marvelous light!
